Some Georgians qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid — often called being "dual eligible." When that happens, Medicare pays first, and Georgia Medicaid may help with costs Medicare leaves behind, like premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance.

How Medicaid works in Georgia

Georgia Medicaid is administered by the Department of Community Health (DCH), with financial eligibility handled through the Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS). Eligibility is set by the state and the federal government — not by an insurance agency — so we'll point you to the right place to apply and help you understand how it affects your Medicare choices.

Programs that can lower your costs

  • Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs) — QMB, SLMB, and QI — help pay the Part B premium ($202.90 in 2026) and, for QMB, other cost-sharing. In Georgia these are handled through DFCS.
  • Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy) lowers what you pay for Part D prescription drug coverage.
  • Dual Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) are Medicare Advantage plans designed for people with both Medicare and Medicaid; they coordinate the two programs and often add extra benefits while keeping your Medicaid benefits intact.

By the way — if you'd like free, unbiased state counseling, you can reach GeorgiaCares (Georgia's State Health Insurance Assistance Program) at 1-800-669-8387, and you apply for Medicaid through the state's Georgia Gateway portal. When you're ready to talk through your Medicare options, we're here at (770) 285-5174.

How we help

We'll help you understand whether a D-SNP is available and a good fit where you live, how a Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help could reduce your costs, and how to keep your Medicaid benefits working alongside Medicare. Eligibility decisions rest with the state and CMS; our job is to make the Medicare side clear.

ECOS Medicare Solutions is a private insurance agency and is not connected with or endorsed by Georgia Medicaid, the Georgia Department of Community Health, or the federal Medicare program.
